Orientation Module

Every assignment has a rubric that explains exactly what you need to do to earn a completion for that assignment. Please get in the habit of viewing the rubric before you complete an assignment.

Orientation Module Objectives

By the end of this orientation you will be able to:

  1. Contact Michelle or your classmates for help
  2. Identify what I expect of you and what you can expect of me
  3. Navigate through a Canvas module
  4. Familiarize yourself with the course requirements and structure
  5. Get oriented to VoiceThread
  6. Set-up your notifications and profile settings
  7. Take a survey using the Canvas Quiz tool

Module 1 Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the significance and explain the basic characteristics of the silhouette, cyanotype photogram, camera obscura, and photogenic drawing to the invention of photography

Module 2 Learning Objectives

  1. Visually decode a photograph.
  2. Identify the significance and explain the basic characteristics of the daguerreotype, calotype, heliography, and the latent image.
  3. Identify the contributions of Daguerre, Niépce, Talbot, and Bayard to the invention of photography.
  4. Discuss the problems involved with identifying ownership of inventions and other historical accomplishments.
  5. Examine the historical details and subject matter of one daguerreotype.

Module 3: Wetplate Processes

Module 3 Learning Objectives

  1. Explain the improvements that collodion brought to photography.
  2. Compare and contrast the daguerreotype and calotype processes with the wet plate processes (glass plate negative/albumen print, ambrotype, tintype).
  3. Explain the basic steps and identify the visual characteristics of albumen prints, ambrotypes, and tintypes.
  4. Describe the benefits and challenges with wet-plate processes.
  5. Evaluate how the human desire for portraits influenced the advancement of the photographic medium.
